Dynamic interaction between the elements - the 5th element

In order to apply the metaphor of the four elements to the human condition, the four cannot be understood as separate. For it is the complex and dynamic interactions between the four that create the miracle of the human individual. The elements combine together in an infinity of permutations - it is this mysterious combination that creates the living individual - the 5th element.

In order to contemplate the complexity of the human condition, in which our interpersonal style (Water), thinking style (Earth), emotional style (Air) and motivations (Fire) all influence one another, it is helpful to consider the simplicity of a flower:

From the Earth, a plant grows, but to grow it must have Water, because Earth and Water are the fabric of organic life. Alone the elements of Earth and Water cannot create life. A plant requires Air for respiration and photosynthesis. It also requires the Fire of the sun to turn light into chemical energy. So, the four elements must combine in dynamic interaction to create the miracle of the 5th element - the individual flower.
